The Moon and Stars watermelon is a captivating heirloom variety known for its dark green rind adorned with bright yellow spots resembling a celestial night sky. Introduced in 1926 by Peter Henderson & Co. as "Sun, Moon, and Stars," it was later rediscovered in the 1980s and has since become a beloved garden staple.

This variety produces sweet, pinkish-red flesh and can yield fruits weighing between 10 to 40 pounds. Its thick rind is excellent for pickling.

To cultivate Moon and Stars watermelons, plant seeds ½–1 inch deep in well-drained soil after the last frost. Ensure the plants receive full sun and space them 6–8 feet apart. Harvest when the tendril nearest the fruit turns brown and the melon sounds hollow when tapped. Ideal for home gardeners, this variety thrives in warm climates and adds both visual appeal and delicious flavor to your garden.
