Viburnum prunifolium

Viburnum prunifolium, commonly known as Black Haw or American Sloe, is a native shrub found in eastern and central North America. This deciduous plant offers a myriad of ecological benefits. Its spring blooms attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, contributing to local biodiversity. In the fall, its vibrant red to purple berries provide a crucial food source for a variety of wildlife, including songbirds, gamebirds, and small mammals.

Growing Viburnum prunifolium successfully requires some care. It prefers well-drained soil and thrives in full to partial sun. Planting in the fall or early spring is ideal. Pruning, if needed, should be done after flowering to encourage growth and berry production. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds, benefiting its growth. Moreover, these shrubs are hardy and resistant to many pests and diseases.
