Sporobolus heterolepis

Commonly known as Prairie Dropseed, this perennial grass is loved for its many seasons of interest. Leaves range from green in summer to golden orange in fall and fade to a beautiful bronze for winter. Hardy enough to stand up and not be flattened by snow, this ornamental grass boasts round tufts that reach approximately 18" tall. Tiny flower heads that smell like coriander arrive from July to September. Small seeds drop to the ground in fall, hence the common name "dropseed".

Plant in full sun with moist, well-drained soil. Requiring little care, prairie dropseed is rocky soil and drought tolerant, as well as, deer resistant. A great choice for borders, prairie gardens and for use as a groundcover.

Plant in the garden with Allium, Pennisetum, Helenium and Perovskia as companions.

Native to North America.

Available in quarts and gallons.
