Sassafras albidum

Sassafras is a generally small, native tree that's native to much of the eastern US. It's typically found in thickets, forest margins and along roads, however when planted as a specimen tree, its a true sight to see. It's deeply lobed, interesting leaves, and multi-branching stature make it an interesting choice for your garden. After many years, the tree could reach up to 60 feet tall, however it will be enjoyed as a small tree for years to come.

Sassafras is a truly stunning tree in the fall, as its leaves change to a literal rainbow of  gold, red and purple. To Native Americans, sassafras oils were freely used in tonics as medical panaceas. Culinary uses have included: sassafras tea (bark), root beer flavoring (root oil) and a gumbo-thickening agent called filé (stem pith). More recently, sassafras oils have been determined to contain a carcinogenic substance (safrole) and many of the former uses for the oils are now banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Plant Sassafras full sun or part sun area in average soil.

Arrives to you in a 1.5 gallon-sized pot, approximately 24-36" tall.
