Photinia pyrifolia

A mid-sized, multi-stemmed shrub, Red Chokeberry is native to most of Eastern North America. With four seasons of interest, this beauty deserves a prime placement at the back of pollinator gardens or planted in groups to form wildlife friendly thickets. The Spring blooms are delicate white petals framing whispy pink pistils that precede rich green summer foliage. In the fall, the signature red berries appear as the leaves fade into orange then drop leaving behind red-tinged stems.

Chokeberries are very adaptable when it comes to sun exposure and soil quality although they do appreciate lots of moisture and can tolerate moderate flooding which makes them a wonderful choice for rain gardens. With an upright vaselike growth habit, this variety does not need much room to spread out but needs more attention as they mature. Periodic pruning to avoid them becoming leggy and prompt sucker removal are key to keeping them neat and tidy.

Comes to you in a 2-gallon sized pot about 2-3' tall, as shown in photo 4.

*Please note: Our native plants are field-grown and untreated with pesticides or fertilizers (how it should be!) Because of this, some varieties may show spots, browning or holes in the foliage during the fall months. Our plants have been organically treated if needed and are healthy and strong.
