Platycodon grandiflorus

Platycodon Fuji Blue, commonly known as balloon flower, is a charming perennial prized for its unique buds and vivid blooms. Native to East Asia, it gets its name from balloon-like buds that swell before opening into star-shaped, deep blue flowers. This compact cultivar typically grows 12 to 20 inches tall, making it ideal for borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Blooming from mid- to late summer, it provides a long-lasting splash of color when many perennials begin to fade. The plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, loamy soil. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, requiring little more than occasional watering and deadheading to prolong blooming. Hardy in USDA zones 3–8, Fuji Blue returns reliably each year and resists most pests and diseases. Its striking blue flowers, tidy growth habit, and whimsical balloon-shaped buds make it a delightful addition to sunny garden spaces.
