Quercus palustris

Pin Oak is a member of the red oak family. It receives the 'Pin' name because its lower branches will naturally break off over time, leaving pin-like stubs along the trunk. It is the most-popular oak tree commercially in the US, and it features fabulous deep red foliage in the fall, making it a popular addition to one's garden or yard. 

Pin oak will grow to about 60 feet tall and 5 feet wide, over many years. It blooms with inconspicuous flowers in April. Prefers medium to wet soil and is well suited for many moist garden applications, like water gardens or near rivers or streams as a natural erosion tool. Great shade tree.
