Begonia grandis

Begonia grandis, also known as hardy begonia, is a charming perennial valued for its late-season beauty and resilience. Native to China and Japan, it thrives in shaded or partially shaded garden spots where many other plants struggle. This begonia is admired for its attractive, heart-shaped leaves, which are green on top and flushed with red beneath, adding texture and color contrast to shady borders. From midsummer into fall, delicate clusters of pink or white flowers dangle gracefully on arching stems, brightening the garden when most shade plants have finished blooming. Hardy to USDA zones 6–9, Begonia grandis tolerates cooler climates better than most begonias, making it a unique addition to temperate gardens. It prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil and benefits from mulching in colder regions. Once established, it often self-seeds gently, forming naturalized drifts. Its combination of foliage and blooms makes it a reliable shade garden treasure.
