Packera obovata, commonly known as roundleaf ragwort or roundleaf groundsel, is a low-growing native perennial valued for its cheerful yellow flowers and attractive evergreen foliage. Blooming in early to mid-spring, the plant produces clusters of daisy-like flowers on slender stems that rise above rounded, deep green basal leaves. Native to woodlands and shaded slopes in eastern North America, Packera obovata thrives in partial to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It gradually spreads through rhizomes to form a dense groundcover, making it useful for naturalized gardens, woodland borders, and erosion control. The flowers provide an early nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators emerging in spring. Its evergreen foliage also adds year-round interest in mild climates. Packera obovata is appreciated for being hardy, low maintenance, and adaptable to difficult shaded areas where many plants struggle. Its natural appearance and ecological benefits make it an excellent choice for native plant and pollinator gardens.
