The luffa plant, often known as loofah or sponge gourd, is a fast-growing vine from the cucumber family. It's famous for its fibrous interior, which, when dried, becomes a natural sponge used in bathing or cleaning. Luffa thrives in warm climates with plenty of sunshine and a long growing season—typically 150 to 200 frost-free days.

To grow luffa at home, start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost. Use biodegradable pots, as luffa seedlings dislike root disturbance. Transplant them outdoors once the soil is warm and all frost danger has passed. Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil and provide a sturdy trellis, as the vines can grow over 10 feet long. Keep the soil consistently moist and fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer. Harvest young fruits for cooking, or let them mature and dry on the vine for sponges. Once fully dry, peel, shake out seeds, and rinse the sponge.
