Hibiscus moscheutos

Hibiscus moscheutos, commonly known as hardy hibiscus or swamp rose mallow, is a striking perennial native to wetlands and riverbanks of eastern North America. This plant is celebrated for its enormous, dinner-plate-sized blooms that can span 8 to 12 inches across, appearing in shades of white, pink, red, or bicolors. Its lush, green foliage creates a bold backdrop for the dramatic flowers, which bloom from mid- to late summer and often continue into early fall, attracting hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Growing 3 to 7 feet tall, Hibiscus moscheutos thrives in full sun and moist, rich soils, making it ideal for rain gardens, pond edges, or damp borders. Despite its tropical appearance, it is remarkably cold-hardy, tolerating USDA zones 5–9. Cutting stems back in late fall encourages healthy regrowth in spring. With its showy flowers, ecological value, and resilience, hardy hibiscus adds vibrant, long-lasting beauty to gardens and naturalized landscapes.
