The hart's tongue fern (Asplenium scolopendrium) is a unique and elegant evergreen fern known for its glossy, strap-shaped fronds that resemble a deer’s tongue—hence its name. Unlike most ferns with feathery foliage, this species features simple, undivided fronds that grow in a tidy, upright rosette, adding architectural interest to shady gardens. Native to Europe and parts of North America, it thrives in cool, moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter.

Reaching about 12 to 24 inches in height, the hart's tongue fern prefers part to full shade and performs well in woodland gardens, shaded rock gardens, or tucked into crevices of stone walls. It pairs beautifully with hostas, hellebores, and other shade-loving perennials. This fern is deer-resistant and generally low-maintenance, offering year-round interest thanks to its evergreen foliage. With its sculptural form and lush, green color, it brings a touch of refinement and texture to shady garden spaces.

Native to North America.
