Opuntia humifusa, commonly known as the Eastern Prickly Pear, is a hardy cactus native to North America. It is known for its flat, rounded pads and vibrant yellow flowers that bloom in summer. The plant produces sweet, edible fruit called "tunas" which are a bright red or purple when ripe. Opuntia humifusa thrives in well-drained, sandy or rocky soil and prefers full sunlight. It is highly drought-tolerant, making it an ideal choice for xeriscaping or low-water gardens.

To grow Opuntia humifusa in a garden, choose a location with plenty of sunlight and ensure the soil drains well to prevent root rot. Plant the cactus in a hole slightly larger than its root ball, and avoid overwatering—this plant is more resilient to dry conditions than to excess moisture. For the first few years, protect the young plants from extreme cold or frost. Once established, Opuntia humifusa is a low-maintenance and visually striking addition to any garden.
