It naturally occurs from Pennsylvania to Florida and features large spikes adorned with small round white flowers that bloom in April and May. Leaves are bluish-green. Its common names comes from the genus' use during colonial times as a replacement for true indigo in dyes for fabrics.

Flower is very attractive to butterflies and is a solid pollinator for bees. Plant in full sun to part shade with dry to average soil moisture. Use as a specimen plant or in mass plantings. Works well in cottage, native, meadow and prairie gardens.
