Asclepias perennis

Asclepias perennis, commonly known as aquatic milkweed or swamp milkweed, is a charming perennial native to the southeastern United States. Unlike its taller relatives, it remains compact, usually growing 1–2 feet tall, making it suitable for smaller gardens. Its clusters of delicate white to pale pink flowers bloom from late spring through summer, attracting butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. As a host plant for monarch caterpillars, it plays an essential ecological role in supporting declining butterfly populations. Its preference for moist conditions makes it ideal for rain gardens, pond edges, or consistently damp areas in the landscape.

To grow Asclepias perennis, plant it in rich, loamy soil that retains moisture without becoming stagnant. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, tolerating both garden beds and container culture. Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods. Once established, this low-maintenance native perennial provides beauty and vital wildlife support season after season.
