Asarum splendens

Also known as Chinese Wild Ginger, this is a slow-growing ground cover for shady areas. Over time, the plants fill in to create a thick mat that require little attention. However, they are not at all drought tolerant and need watered regularly if they are not planted in already naturally moist, rich soil.

Semi-evergreen, the gray/silver and green leaves remain year round in warm climates but may lose leaves in zones 5 and 6. No pruning is necessary to maintain the low growth pattern and in the spring, look for interesting purple tubular flowers underneath the leaves. Expect blooms from early to mid-spring.
