Also known as Barrenwort, this charming perennial brings rich color to shady gardens with its wine-purple spring flowers tipped in white that seem to float above delicate foliage. Blooms appear in April–May, and the small leaflets often emerge with bronze tones before maturing to green, adding extra seasonal interest before and after flowering. Plant as a feature in a shade border, beneath trees or shrubs, or mass planted to create an effective, low groundcover with graceful, airy blooms.

Because Epimedium naturally grows as an understory woodland plant, it prefers partial to full shade and soil rich in organic matter that stays consistently moist but well-drained. Once established, it tolerates some dry periods, is generally deer resistant, and remains easy care for long-term shade plantings.
