Rudbeckia maxima

Rudbeckia maxima, commonly known as giant coneflower, is a bold perennial admired for its striking height and dramatic foliage. Reaching up to 6–7 feet tall, it bears tall, sturdy stems topped with golden-yellow petals that droop gracefully around a dark, elongated central cone. Its large, powdery-blue basal leaves add ornamental interest even before flowering, making it a standout in perennial borders or native plant gardens. Blooming from early to mid-summer, Rudbeckia maxima attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, while its seed heads provide winter food for birds.

To grow Rudbeckia maxima, plant it in full sun with moist, well-drained soil. It adapts well to clay or sandy conditions and tolerates occasional drought once established, though regular watering encourages stronger growth. Space plants generously to accommodate their height and spread. Deadheading can prolong bloom time, while leaving seed heads standing adds winter interest. Hardy and low-maintenance, it’s ideal for naturalistic garden designs.
