Liatris pycnostachya, commonly known as prairie blazing star or Kansas gayfeather, is a tall native perennial admired for its striking purple flower spikes and value to pollinators. Blooming from mid to late summer, the plant produces fluffy, densely packed flowers that open from the top downward, creating a unique and eye-catching display. It can grow three to five feet tall, adding height and texture to prairie gardens, borders, and naturalized landscapes. Liatris pycnostachya thrives in full sun and adapts well to a variety of soils, including clay and moderately moist conditions. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant and low maintenance. The nectar-rich blooms attract butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects, making it an excellent choice for pollinator-friendly gardens. This native wildflower also provides seasonal interest and pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses and other prairie plants. Its long-lasting blooms make it valuable for fresh and dried floral arrangements as well.
