The cinnamon fern (Osmundastrum cinnamomeum) is a striking, deciduous fern native to North America. It features large, arching green fronds that can grow up to 5 feet tall, adding bold texture to moist, shady landscapes. In spring, it produces distinctive, cinnamon-colored fertile fronds from the center of the plant—hence its name. Cinnamon ferns thrive in rich, consistently moist soils and are commonly found in wetlands, streambanks, and shaded woodlands. They are deer-resistant and provide excellent habitat for wildlife. With their lush, tropical look, they make a dramatic addition to shade gardens, especially when paired with hostas and native woodland plants.
