Scutellaria incana, commonly called hoary skullcap, is a hardy perennial native to central and eastern North America. It grows 2–4 feet tall, producing upright spikes of tubular, violet-blue flowers from midsummer into early fall. The blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to native plant and pollinator gardens. Its gray-green, softly hairy foliage gives the plant its “hoary” name and adds subtle texture to the landscape.

To grow Scutellaria incana, choose a location in full sun to light shade with well-drained soil. It tolerates dry to medium moisture and is drought-resistant once established, thriving even in poor or sandy soils. Plant in spring or fall, spacing 18–24 inches apart. Minimal care is required beyond occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. This long-blooming, low-maintenance perennial is both ornamental and ecologically beneficial, providing reliable color and pollinator support through the heat of summer.
