The Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) is a hardy, evergreen fern native to eastern North America. It gets its name from its ability to stay green even during the winter months, making it a popular choice for adding year-round texture to shade gardens. This low-maintenance fern typically grows in clumps that reach 1 to 2 feet in height and spread slowly over time through rhizomes.

Its leathery, lance-shaped fronds have a distinctive, toothed appearance, and their glossy dark green color provides a welcome contrast to woodland or shady garden plantings. The Christmas fern thrives in part to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It’s particularly useful for erosion control on slopes and woodland edges.

Deer-resistant and relatively pest-free, this fern adds structure and winter interest to native gardens, shaded borders, and naturalized landscapes. It's also a great companion for hostas, heucheras, and other shade-loving plants.
