Rubus strigosus, commonly known as the American red raspberry, is a perennial shrub native to North America and a close relative of the cultivated European red raspberry. It typically grows in open woods, forest edges, and disturbed sites where sunlight is abundant. The plant produces arching canes that live for two years: the first-year primocanes develop leaves but no flowers, while the second-year floricanes bear clusters of delicate white blossoms followed by bright red, hollow-centered berries. These berries are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and natural sugars, making them highly valued by wildlife and humans alike.

Rubus strigosus spreads through both seed and underground rhizomes, allowing it to form dense thickets that provide habitat for birds and small mammals. Its leaves and stems are covered with fine prickles—hence the species name strigosus, meaning “bristly.” As a hardy, resilient species, it plays an important ecological role in early-successional habitats and contributes to soil stabilization and biodiversity.
