Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Red Head'

Pennisetum ‘Red Head’ is an eye-catching ornamental fountain grass valued for its dramatic plumes and graceful texture. This warm-season perennial forms a dense, arching clump of green foliage that reaches about 3–4 feet tall. By midsummer, it produces striking, bottlebrush-like flower spikes that emerge deep red, gradually maturing to smoky purple before softening to tan in autumn. These bold plumes rise well above the foliage and provide long-lasting interest, both fresh in the garden and as cut or dried accents. ‘Red Head’ thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, showing good drought tolerance once established. It works beautifully as a focal point in borders, mass plantings, or containers, where its movement and color bring drama and elegance. Hardy in zones 5–9, it requires little maintenance beyond cutting back old foliage in late winter or early spring. Pennisetum ‘Red Head’ adds bold texture, seasonal flair, and year-round garden appeal.
