Ceratostigma plumbaginoides

Ceratostigma plumbaginoides, commonly called plumbago or leadwort, is a versatile perennial groundcover prized for its vivid late-season color. Native to China, it forms low, spreading mats of green foliage that turn striking shades of bronze and red in autumn. From late summer into fall, it produces clusters of intense cobalt-blue flowers, creating a dramatic contrast against its changing leaves. Growing about 6–12 inches tall, it is ideal for edging paths, filling gaps in borders, or cascading over walls. Plumbago thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts to a variety of well-drained soils, including sandy or rocky sites. It is drought-tolerant once established and deer-resistant, making it a low-maintenance choice for many gardens. In colder climates, it dies back to the ground in winter but reliably reemerges each spring. Its combination of vivid flowers, seasonal foliage, and adaptability makes Ceratostigma plumbaginoides a standout groundcover for four-season interest.
