Lupinus perennis

Lupinus perennis, commonly known as the wild lupine, is a perennial flowering plant native to North America. This species belongs to the legume family, Fabaceae, and is known for its striking blue to purple flowers that grow in tall, spiky clusters. Wild lupine typically blooms in late spring to early summer, attracting a variety of pollinators, especially bees. The plant prefers well-drained, sandy soils and can often be found in prairies, meadows, and open woodlands.

Lupinus perennis is also valued for its ecological benefits. Like other legumes, it has the ability to fix nitrogen in the soil, enriching the soil's fertility. It plays a crucial role in supporting local ecosystems, providing habitat and food for numerous species. Additionally, wild lupine serves as the host plant for the endangered Karner blue butterfly (Lycaeides melissa samuelis), making its conservation important for biodiversity.
