Magnolia tripetala

The Umbrella magnolia gets its name from the large, whorl-like leaf clusters that resemble the spokes of an umbrella. Leaves are large at up to 24" long and 10" across. Malodorus white flowers are shaped like bowls and arrive in spring (May) shortly after leaves emerge. Cone-like pink fruits follow the blooms and ripen in fall.

An understory tree, this magnolia thrives in part shade, but can tolerate full shade and even grow in full sun if soil is kept moist. Benefits from consistent soil moisture as it does not prefer the extremes of being too dry or too wet. Make a nice specimen planting for shady lawn areas.
