Silphium perfoliatum
Commonly known as Cup Plant, this native perennial has large leaves that join at the stem to form a cup. Water collects in this "cup" and is attractive to birds and other insects looking for a drink. Yellow daisy-like flowers appear in summer and bloom into fall (July - October).
Plant in full sun to partial shade with moist to dry soil. Plants can grow to about 6-8' tall (more in wetter soils, less in drier soil) and are very attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Birds also like to feed on the seeds.
A vigorous grower, Cup Plant is a great choice for the back of the border, along fences and to fill up a sunny corner of your yard.
Native to the Eastern United States.
Arrives to you in a gallon sized container.
