Salix melanostachys

The black cat of the pussy willows, this particular variety is truly unique. In the early spring, fuzzy catkins appear as pink and silver but mature into a striking black. A bit of a contradiction, this Asian variety needs full sun but also wants lots of water. In fact, this one is practically made for rain gardens.

Beautiful and easy to grow, the the catkins work well in cut flower bouquets and they hold their color when dried. Since they bloom on old wood, pruning should happen early in the summer to prepare it for the following year. Be sure to give this beauty room to grow as it can reach 10-12 feet tall and wide.
