Rudbeckia hirta 'Cherry Brandy'

Also known as Black-eyed Susan, this variety is slightly smaller and more compact than traditional Rudbeckia - topping out at about 2 feet tall. The blooms that appear in the early summer are deep cherry red with lighter red highlights surrounding deep brown centers.

This beauty is a sun-lover and is often found growing in meadows where it naturalizes quickly. When planted in your garden, deadheading will not only encourage new blooms but will also inhibit reseeding. However, unlike traditional perennials, this variety is semi-annual and comes back each year from seed. If you are growing with the intention of naturalizing, let this one go to seed in the fall and you will be greeted in spring with dozens of new blooms. For tidier gardens, it is best treated as a semi-annual and trimmed back before the seeds mature. While it is not unusual to have this Rudbeckia return the next year, it is not a true perennial and will need to be replaced after a couple years unless left to self-seed.
