The David Austin rose Tess of the d’Urbervilles is a striking English climbing rose introduced in 1998, named after Thomas Hardy’s tragic heroine. It features large, deeply cupped blooms of rich crimson, which create a dramatic and romantic presence in the garden. The velvety petals are packed in classic old rose style, and the blooms carry a light old rose fragrance. While it can be grown as a large shrub, Tess of the d’Urbervilles is especially effective when trained as a climber, reaching around 6 to 8 feet. It’s ideal for walls, trellises, and obelisks, offering both visual impact and a long flowering period from late spring through fall. The foliage is a healthy, glossy green that contrasts beautifully with the intense red blooms. Known for its vigor and repeat flowering, it brings both strength and beauty to a garden setting.
