Rhus copallinum

Most commonly known as Winged Sumac, this native deciduous shrub or small tree is a fast grower! Tiny yellow feathery panicles appear in mid to late summer. Hairy red berries follow the pollinated female flowers in fall and persist into winter. The shiny dark-green leaves turn a bright orange-red in fall.

Plant in full sun to part shade with dry to moist soil. Winged Sumac is an easy to grow shrub that spreads through root suckers to form colonies. An important food source for birds and other wildlife in fall when other food is scarce. Will tolerate drought, dry and rocky soils and is rabbit resistant.

A great choice to help with erosion control due to its strong root development. Plant in native gardens, naturalized areas and for stabilizing embankments. Garden companions include Asclepias, Baptisia, Symphyotrichum and Hamamelis.

Native to the Eastern United States.
