Rhus aromatica

Most commonly known as Fragrant Sumac, this native deciduous shrub is a dense, low-growing plant. Leaves and branches are fragrant when bruised, hence the common name. Tiny yellow feathery panicles appear in early spring before the foliage appears. Hairy red berries follow the pollinated female flowers in fall and persist into winter. The dark-green leaves turn shades of bright orange, red or purple in fall.

Plant in full sun to part shade with dry to moist soil. Fragrant Sumac is an easy to grow shrub that spreads through root suckers to form colonies. An important food source for birds and other wildlife in fall when other food is scarce. Will tolerate drought, dry and rocky soils and is rabbit resistant.

A great choice to help with erosion control due to its strong root development. Plant in native gardens, naturalized areas and for stabilizing embankments. Garden companions include Asclepias, Baptisia, Symphyotrichum and Hamamelis.

Native to the Eastern United States.

Arrives to you in a 3 gallon container.
