Cornus alternifolia

The unusual branch structure and growth habit of the Pagoda Dogwood makes this a wonderful addition to almost every landscape/gardening scheme. Prune liberally to keep it smaller and shrub-like or let it go for more of a tree effect. Because it stays small (15-20 feet max height)it makes a wonderful understory tree for shady areas but its adaptability allows for use as a feature in a smaller yard.

Pagoda Dogwood prefers some shade, especially during the heat of the day and in warmer zones but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. Plant in well-draining , moderately acidic, organically rich soil for best results and mulching is recommended for moisture retention.

In the spring, white, flat-topped clusters of blooms form shortly after the early leaves appear and make the tree look as though it is covered in a dusting of snow. In the summer, those blooms turn to small deep indigo fruit on red stalks and the distinct pattern of the leaves add seasonal interest and good cover for local wildlife. In the fall, this beauty fades out into reddish-purple tinged with yellow before the leaves drop.

Arrives to you in a 2-gallon pot about 2-3' tall, as shown in photo 5 and 6. Buds are currently flushing out new leaf growth.
