Kalmia latifolia
Mountain Laurel is a highly sought-after native shrub that is commonly found in many parts of the northeastern US, including Pennsylvania. It is commonly sourced do to its extremely intricate and interesting flower clusters that grow in a sphere of bell shaped smaller flowers that are white with pink centers, pink anthers and stamens. It's flowers give way to slightly unattractive brown fruits which will stay through winter and do provide a food source to birds. Its leaves are evergreen and slightly resemble that of a rhododendrons. State flower of both Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
Plant Mountain Laurel in any light condition. Typically, it will thrive with morning sun and afternoon shade. It's highly tolerant of most light, however, and also fairly tolerant of soil moisture. The flower is showy and the plant is highly tolerant of deer and rabbits, making it a good choice to be planted in the mid-atlantic region where deer and rabbits are present.
