Dryopteris atrata 'Shaggy Shield Fern'

This fern features a medium-sized clump of light green fronds, with stems covered in tiny black scales. The appearance is stiff and leathery, with an arching habit. Plants are clumping inhabit, and well suited to use in any moist, shady situation.

'Shaggy Sheild Fern' is also a great addition in tubs or mixed containers, combining beautifully with other shade-loving plants, such as Hostas or Hellebores.  Mulch around the plants with dead leaves in the fall, to help conserve moisture in the summer.  Frond color is best when planted in part shade and the color is most vibrant after the second winter dormancy. Deciduous. Leaves may be trimmed to the ground in late fall or early spring. Plants are easily divided in spring, every 3 to 4 years.
