Although originally native in Asia and Japan, the Crape Myrtle has become naturalized in much of the southern US, particularly in Virginia and the Carolinas. In cooler zones Crape Myrtle remains more compact and shrub-like.

Ease of care contributes to the Crape Myrtle's popularity although the bright pink-lavender blooms of Bellini™ 'Grape' would be worth working for. Blooms appear on new growth so pruning should be done in early spring after the threat of hard frost has passed.
