Magnolia macrophylla

Bigleaf magnolia is a gorgeous flowering tree that is sure to make a BIG statement in your garden. It boasts foliage that grows up to 30" long and are the largest simple leaves grown on any tree native to North America. The massive leaves are silvery-gray on the undersides and green above. This specimen tree grows in a pyramidal shape that grows into a rounded crown as it matures. Best planted in a location protected from strong winds that could potentially shred the large leaves.

Fragrant, open cup-shaped flowers are white with a rose-purple marking near the petal bases. Also large, these flowers typically grow to about 8-10" wide. Expect blooms in May. Cone-like spherical fruits arrive after flowering. They will ripen to a beautiful red in late summer.

The name, magnolia macrophylla, honors the French botanist Pierre Magnol (1638-1715). Bigleaf magnolia comes from the Greek meanings for macro (large) and phyllon (leaf), which references the massive leaves.

Native to the eastern United States.

Arrives to you in a 2 gallon pot.

*Please note: Our native plants are field-grown and untreated with pesticides or fertilizers (how it should be!) Because of this, some varieties may show spots, browning or holes in the foliage during the fall months. Our plants have been organically treated if needed and are healthy and strong.
