Asarum europaeum

Also known as European Wild Ginger, this is a slow-growing ground cover for shady areas. Over time, the plants fill in to create a thick mat that requires little attention. However, they are not at all drought tolerant and need watered regularly if they are not planted in already naturally moist, rich soil.

Semi-evergreen, the glossy dark green leaves remain year round in warm climates but may lose leaves in zones 5 and 6. No pruning is necessary to maintain the low growth pattern and in the spring, look for interesting greenish-yellow tubular flowers underneath the leaves. Expect blooms from early to mid-spring (April - May).
