Asarum canadense

An important native groundcover to have in the understory of your garden or woodland areas of your yard. They support habitats for native caterpillars that sustain our native birds. The heart shaped leaves form a very attractive cover and cup-shaped, purplish brown flowers bloom underneath the foliage in spring. Historically the fresh or dried roots were used by early Americans as a ginger substitute.
