Ilex opaca

The traditional American Holly is a familiar evergreen shrub, native to the Eastern US and easily identifiable by its glossy spiked green leaves and distinct red berries. In garden settings, the slow growth habit allows for pruning and shaping whereas in the wild it forms a pyramid shape, somewhat like a pine and can reach heights of up to 50 feet.

Ilex are dioecius, meaning the male and female flowers grow on separate plants. In order to produce fruit, you will need to plant a male Ilex like 'Jim Dandy' within 25-30 feet. Pollinated females produce the well known red berries in the fall and linger well into winter.

Ilex prefer moist, organically rich soil and can even tolerate some clay and adapts well to all levels of sun exposure except full shade.

Comes to you in a 1 gallon pot, about roughly 18" tall.
