Acanthus spinosus

Commonly called bear's breeches, this is a clump-forming perennial which is grown as much for its attractive foliage as for its big bold flower spikes. Deeply-cut, glossy green, spiny, thistle-like leaves are the base for the tall pink/mauve flower spikes that bloom from late spring and into summer. Blooms resemble snapdragons which bring a pop of color to shady spots and make attractive additions to cut-flower bouquets.

This plant prefers well-drained soil in partial shade, with some protection from the afternoon sun. While it grows in a wide variety of soils it does not do well in wet soils. Slow growing, it can take some time to establish but once it takes hold, it spreads easily by seed and root cutting. May be divided or moved in spring. Any root pieces left in the ground will grow into new little plants

A great option for planting in borders and for those wanting a cottage garden look. A Landscaper's favorite! Arrives to you in a gallon-sized container.
