Corylus americana

The American Filbert or Hazelnut tree is an upright, deciduous shrub that is remarkable for the long yellowish brown catkins that appear on male flowers (female flowers have less conspicuous small red catkins). Easy to grow in all but the driest conditions, this beauty naturalizes easily and forms dense thickets when left to grow wild.

Self-pollinating, the female flowers develop small round nuts encased in husk-like brachts. The nuts taste like European filberts and can be roasted and enjoyed all winter long or leave them on the stems for squirrels and birds.

Adaptable to most soil, the American Hazelnut loves full sun but will tolerate partial shade and grows to 10'-15' tall and wide. Best for informal gardens or mass planted as borders.

Available in 2 gallon pots, 12-18" tall.
