Prunus americana

A native plum tree that forms thickets and produces huge amounts of small delicious fruit, the American plum, is one of the first shrubs to bloom in woodlands. Its showy white flowers appear before the leaves have unfolded. Fall foliage ranges from electric yellow to deep red and the black bark is striking against the winter sky.

The broadly spreading branches form low growth thickets when planted in groups but the open canopy allows the dappled sunlight that they prefer to reach the lower leaves. The branches are thorny so care is required when tending.

American plum is highly important as cover and food for local wildlife. The fruit makes excellent jellies and preserves, or may be eaten raw, cooked and dried. American plum is self-pollinating, however fruit production will be higher with two or more trees planted near each other.
